ytterbium triooxide are some of the more commonly found compounds in ytterbium. It is characterized by a rare earth C-type sesquioxide structure. The fluorite structure removes a quarter from the anions, and ytterbium can be found in two six-coordinated (nonoctahedral), environments.

Also colorless, paramagnetic trivalent ytterbium-ions have sharp absorption bands within the near infrared spectrum. This can be used to analyze quantitatively ytterbiumium. You can reduce the ytterbium-chloride (YbCl3) with hydrogen. An aqueous solution can make the bivalent trivalent ytterbium Ion unstable.

Is it Produced?
1. A mixture of rare earth and yttrium-niobium ore is formed by decomposition. This method yields 350% Y2Oand approximately 4% CeO2. The rare earth solution is added to the raw material after cerium has been removed. After that, N263 LiO3 is used to extract the yttrium-rich precious earth. The organic phase of lutetium (thulium), ytterbium (lutetium) was separated by N263 solvent extraction. Thulium and the aqueous phases were then separated by oxalic acids precipitation, filtering, and calcination to create ytterbiumoxide.
2. Yb3+ was extracted from rare-earth ions via solvent extraction, ion swap or reduction. Yb3+ enrichment was used as a raw material. After that, the ytterbium was precipitated as hydroxide or carbonate with the appropriate precipitant. The ytterbiumoxide is made by heating the hydroxide carbonate or oxalate.
