How does calcium nitride get made?
Ca3N2 and the CaO will form when calcium ignites in the atmosphere. Following heating to 450degC the distillated fibrous metallic calcium in a stream containing purified nitrogen, the metallic Calcium is then nitrided to calcium nitride. This takes about 3-4 hours.
According to the temperature at which it is prepared, calcium nitride obtained can either be dark at 350degC, creamy white between 350 and 1150degC, as well as golden yellow at 1150 degC. Because it is able to react with water or moisture, the formed calcium nitride can be easily identified and turn into calcium and/or ammonia.

Ca3N2 can produce reactive nitride. Desiccant can be made by heating calcium nutride to 350°C.
