sodium hydrogen sulfate is the sodium salt of the bisulfate anion, and has the molecular formula NaHSO4. It is an acidic compound that, in solution, has a pH of 1. It is also known as sulfite of soda or bisulfate of soda, and in its anhydrous form it is hygroscopic.

It is a white solid that has a slightly sulfurous odor, and is soluble in water. It has a density of 1.48 g/cm3. It is very stable, even under extreme conditions such as high temperature or exposure to light, and does not decompose upon heating to produce toxic gasses.

In food production, sodium hydrogen sulfate is often used as an alternative to sulfuric acid. It has the advantage of not forming a sour taste, and lowers the pH of foods without affecting flavor. It can be found in leavening agents for cakes, and is a common additive in meat and vegetable processing. It is also a popular ingredient in household cleaning products. In addition, it can be added to pickling solutions to reduce oxidation and remove copper corrosion from metals. It is also widely used in the gold industry to precipitate cyanide from waste solutions. sodium hydrogen sulfate is highly toxic to at least some echinoderms, but it is fairly harmless to most other life forms; it is used in controlling outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish.

sodium hydrogen sulfate, Fused is offered in a range of grades to meet application requirements including Mil Spec (military grade); ACS, Reagent and Technical Grade; Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade; and Optical Grade. It is also available in typical and custom packaging. Additional technical, research and safety (MSDS) information is available as well as a Reference Calculator for converting relevant units of measurement.
